Founded around 660 BC. Like Byzantium by Greek settlers, the city was incorporated into the Roman Empire. In 330 AD, Emperor Constantine the Great refounded it as 'Nova Roma', making it the capital of the Roman Empire and renaming it Constantinople.
As the capital of the Byzantine Empire for a thousand years, it was the center of Orthodox Christianity and a beacon of culture, culminating in the construction of Hagia Sophia. In 1453, it was conquered by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, becoming the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Under Ottoman rule, the city flourished again as a center of Islamic power, art and magnificent architecture.
With the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the founding of the Republic of Türkiye in 1923, the capital was moved to Ankara. Despite this, officially renamed Istanbul has remained the economic, cultural and demographic heart of the country, a global megacity in constant transformation.
