Public transport: The train network (ÖBB) is extremely efficient, punctual and comfortable connecting major cities and many rural areas. For more remote valleys and towns, postal buses ('Postbus') are an excellent and reliable option.

Language: The official language is German. In cities and tourist areas, English is spoken by a large part of the population, especially by the youngest. Learning some basic German phrases like 'Grüß Gott' (the typical greeting) or 'Danke' (thank you) is always well received.

Tips: Tipping is not strictly mandatory, since the service is included. However, it is customary to round the bill up to the next euro or leave between 5% and 10% in restaurants if the service has been satisfactory. The total amount to be paid is usually indicated to the waiter instead of leaving the money on the table.

Vignette (Highway Vignette): If you travel by car, it is mandatory to purchase a vignette ('Vignette') to be able to travel on Austrian motorways and dual carriageways. It can be purchased at gas stations near the border or digitally. Driving without it carries high fines.
