The territory of Luxembourg was inhabited by Celtic tribes and then conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC. During the Middle Ages, it was part of the Carolingian Empire and was populated by Franks. In 963, Count Siegfried founded the fortress of Luxembourg, marking the beginning of the independent county.
In the 14th century, Luxembourg was elevated to a duchy by Emperor Charles IV, becoming a center of power under the Valois dynasty. Later, it passed into Spanish and French hands, facing numerous military conflicts but maintaining its identity.
