Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, the area was founded by Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a Haitian merchant, around 1780. Incorporated as a city in 1837, its strategic location at the confluence of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River positioned it as a key center for transportation and commerce.
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed much of the city, but also catalyzed a period of frenetic rebuilding that made it the birthplace of the skyscraper and a laboratory for modern architecture. Over the next few decades, it established itself as an industrial giant, attracting millions of immigrants and African Americans during the Great Migration, forging its diverse character and rich musical heritage.
Throughout the 20th century, Chicago established itself as a global center of finance, commerce and culture. Despite its reputation during the Prohibition era with figures like Al Capone, the city has become a center for world-class art, theater, and dining. Today, it is celebrated for its innovative public space, vibrant cultural scene and unrivaled architectural heritage.
