It can be very expensive, especially if you stay at the luxury resorts in the Hotel Zone. However, staying and eating downtown can reduce costs significantly.

Wi-Fi is excellent and free in the vast majority of hotels and restaurants. Public connectivity is more limited.
Buying a Telcel or AT&T SIM in an Oxxo store or downtown is a cheap and reliable way to have mobile data.

The bus system in the Hotel Zone is excellent, frequent and very cheap, making it easy to get around.
The northern part of the Hotel Zone (km 3-8) has calmer waters, like a swimming pool. The eastern part (km 10 onwards) faces the open sea and has stronger waves and a more intense blue color.
It is very easy and much cheaper to take the ferry on your own from Puerto Juárez or the Hotel Zone and rent a golf cart there, instead of booking an expensive tour.
Tipping is the norm and expected for good service. 10-15% in restaurants, and small tips for bellboys, waitresses and bartenders are greatly appreciated.
Enjoy Cancun for what it is: an incredible beach resort. But keep in mind that its atmosphere is very international and does not reflect the diversity and culture of the rest of the country.
Even on cloudy days, the Caribbean sun is very strong. Use high SPF sunscreen, reapply after swimming, and wear a hat.
Don't drink tap water. All hotels and restaurants use purified water, so iced drinks and salads are safe.
The Cancun Hotel Zone is extremely safe, with only one entrance and exit road and a lot of surveillance. You can feel very safe there.
At the airport and on the street, people will approach you offering cheap tours or gifts. They are often very persistent timeshare salespeople. A firm 'no, thank you' is usually enough.
