Florianópolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina, is mainly composed of a large coastal island (Santa Catarina Island) and a small continental strip. Waters of the South Atlantic Ocean. In summer (December to March), water temperatures are between 21°C and 25°C, being warmer on the northern beaches. In winter they drop to 15-18°C. The eastern and southern beaches have strong waves, while the northern one is very calm.
The open sea beaches of the east and south (such as Joaquina, Moçambique or Campeche) have strong rip currents. Always respect the lifeguard flags.

The best time to enjoy the beach is from December to March (summer), with very warm days but with a greater influx of tourists and heavy traffic. The autumn months (April and May) are fantastic: pleasant temperatures, still warm sea, less rain and reasonable prices. For lovers of hiking or right whale watching, winter (July to September) offers dry, cool days, although without a beach atmosphere.
During the summer months (January and February), traffic on the main highway (SC-401 and SC-405) to access the northern and southern beaches can back up for hours. Plan your trips early in the morning. On open sea beaches, always follow the instructions of the lifeguards.

Respect the flag signs on the beaches. The red round flag indicates dangerous seas due to rip currents.
