Ontdek het fascinerende verleden van Venice en ontdek hoe het zich door de eeuwen heen heeft ontwikkeld.
Founded by populations fleeing barbarian invasions after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Venetians built their city on the swampy islands of the lagoon to protect themselves. This unique location determined their destiny.
During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Republic of Venice ('La Serenissima') became a formidable maritime power and commercial hub connecting Europe to the East. This wealth financed an incredible artistic flourishing, with masters such as Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese, and dazzling architecture.
After losing its independence to Napoleon and becoming part of Italy in 1866, Venice faced a new challenge: mass tourism. Today, it struggles to preserve its fragile heritage in the face of rising sea levels ('acqua alta') and the pressure of millions of visitors, maintaining its status as a global cultural icon.
De historische chronologie toont de belangrijkste momenten die de ontwikkeling van Venice door de eeuwen heen hebben bepaald.
