Ontdek het fascinerende verleden van Guadalajara en ontdek hoe het zich door de eeuwen heen heeft ontwikkeld.
The first signs of Guadalajara date back to the 8th century, when it was founded as Madīnat al-Faray, a walled city in the Andalusian Middle March, located on the banks of the Henares River.During this time, it was a strategic and fortified enclave, with a fortress built in the 9th century. The city was the scene of disputes between Berber and Muladi clans, and was used as a military base by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III in his campaigns against the Christian kingdoms of the north.
After the Christian reconquest in 1085, Guadalajara became the head of an extensive territory and defensive center, with the reconstruction and improvement of its walls and the castle, an ancient Arab fortress.During the 12th to 15th centuries, the city grew and prospered thanks to royal privileges, trade fairs and an economic dynamism based on agriculture and livestock. In 1460, King Henry IV granted it the title of city, consolidating its political and social importance in Castile.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, Guadalajara has experienced significant urban development, modernizing its infrastructure and expanding its metropolitan area.Currently, it is a relevant administrative and judicial center, headquarters of the Provincial Court and with a diversified economy. The city maintains its historical and cultural heritage, combining tradition and modernity in a privileged natural environment, and plays an active role in the region of Castilla-La Mancha and in the contemporary Spanish context.
