The origins of Jerez de la Frontera date back to ancient times, with human presence since the Chalcolithic more than 5,000 years ago. It was an important settlement in the Tartessian civilization around the 3rd millennium BC. Later, the Phoenicians founded the colony called Xera about 3,000 years ago, becoming a strategic commercial point. Under Roman rule, the city was known as Seritium, notable for its agriculture and livestock.
