Ontdek het fascinerende verleden van Puerto Vallarta en ontdek hoe het zich door de eeuwen heen heeft ontwikkeld.
Before the arrival of the Spanish, the region was inhabited by several indigenous groups, mainly from the Aztatlán culture. Unlike other parts of Mexico, it was not a large ceremonial center, but rather an area of villages along river valleys.
The city was founded in the mid-19th century under the name of Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe. For decades, it was a small fishing town and a port for shipping silver from nearby mines in the Sierra Madre. Its isolation preserved its small-town charm.
The transformation of Puerto Vallarta began in 1963 with the filming of John Huston's film 'Night of the Iguana'. The worldwide attention generated by the romance of its stars, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, put PV on the international tourist map. Since then, it has grown to become a major tourist destination, known for its natural beauty, thriving arts scene, and as a celebrated safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community.
