Bargaining: At craft markets and with street vendors, haggling is a common and expected practice. Always do it with a smile and in a respectful manner.

Security: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in large cities like Santo Domingo. Avoid displaying valuables and be careful at night. Tourist areas and resorts are generally very safe.
