Schedules: Life in Mauritius starts early. Shops are usually open from 09:00 to 17:00. On Thursday afternoons many businesses in small towns close. On Sundays most businesses close early, except in very touristy areas.

Transport: Renting a car is the best option to explore the island at your own pace, but remember that you drive on the left. Public buses are very economical and a cultural experience in themselves, although they can be slow for long distances.

Language: English is the official language (used in administration), but French is the most used in the media and everyday life. However, the mother tongue of almost everyone is Mauritian Creole (Morisyen). The majority of the population is trilingual.

Cultural Respect: When visiting Hindu temples or mosques, it is mandatory to take off your shoes and dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Always ask permission before photographing people in their moments of prayer.
