Strong Mountain Flavors

Slovak cuisine is a reflection of its mountainous geography and agricultural past: it is hearty, tasty and comforting. Based on local ingredients such as potatoes, cabbage, sheep's cheese and smoked meats, it is a cuisine designed to give you energy, ideal for after a day of hiking. It is a cuisine to share, always served with genuine hospitality.

Bryndzové halušky

The national dish par excellence. They are small potato dumplings, similar to gnocchi, mixed with 'bryndza' cheese and covered with pieces of fried bacon. It is a unique and delicious dish.

Kapustnica

A rich and tasty sauerkraut soup with sausages, smoked meat, mushrooms and prunes. It is the traditional Christmas Eve dish, but it is enjoyed throughout the winter.

Guláš

Slovak goulash is a thick stew of meat (usually beef), onion and paprika, often served with 'knedľa' (a type of dumpling bread).

Vyprážaný syr

A very popular guilty pleasure. It is a thick slice of cheese (usually Edam) breaded and fried. Served with fries and tartar sauce.

Pirohy

Boiled dumplings, similar to Polish pierogi. The most traditional fillings are 'bryndza' or plum jam ('lekvár'), covered with butter, breadcrumbs or sour cream.

Zemiakové placky

Fried grated potato pancakes, often with garlic and marjoram. They can be eaten alone or as an accompaniment to stews.

Bebidas Típicas

Pivo (Beer)

Beer is the most popular drink, with excellent local brands such as Zlatý Bažant. The beer culture is very similar to that of its Czech neighbors.

Borovička and Slivovica

Two traditional spirits. 'Borovička' is a juniper berry distillate, similar to gin. 'Slivovica' is the famous plum brandy.

Kofola

The Czechoslovak answer to Coca-Cola. It is a cola drink with a unique flavor, based on herbs and fruit syrup, that you either love it or hate it.

Tokaj Wine

Slovakia shares the famous Tokaj wine region with Hungary. Their sweet dessert wines are world-renowned.
