Before the arrival of the Spanish, the region was inhabited by several indigenous groups, mainly from the Aztatlán culture. Unlike other parts of Mexico, it was not a large ceremonial center, but rather an area of villages along river valleys.
The city was founded in the mid-19th century under the name of Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe. For decades, it was a small fishing town and a port for shipping silver from nearby mines in the Sierra Madre. Its isolation preserved its small-town charm.
