Explora el fascinante pasado de Punta Arenas y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Originally inhabited by the nomadic Aonikenk (Tehuelche) peoples, the area was explored by Hernando de Magellan in 1520. The city was officially founded by the Chilean state in 1848 as a strategic enclave for control of the Strait.
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the city experienced a 'golden age' thanks to sheep farming and the rise of maritime trade before the opening of the Panama Canal. This attracted European immigrants, mainly Croatians, Spanish and British, who shaped its architecture.
Today, Punta Arenas is a key logistics center for scientific research in Antarctica, a pole of energy development and a world-class tourist destination that retains its air of a border and cosmopolitan city.
