Founded by the Romans in 38 BC. as 'Oppidum Ubiorum', it was elevated to colony status in 50 AD. and renamed 'Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium', from which its current name derives. It became the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior, a prosperous city with walls, temples and a praetorium.
During the Middle Ages, it became one of the largest and richest cities in Europe. As an Imperial Free City and member of the Hanseatic League, it prospered thanks to trade and being an important pilgrimage center for housing the relics of the Three Wise Men. Despite losing its status as a free city, it remained an important Catholic and commercial center. 90% of its center was destroyed during World War II, but the Cathedral miraculously remained standing. The city was rebuilt and today is a thriving center of media, commerce, art and education, famous for its open attitude and its celebration of Carnival.
