Early Spring (January - April)
A traditional Catalan gastronomic festival. It consists of eating 'calçots' (grilled tender onions) dipped in romesco sauce, followed by grilled meat. It is celebrated in 'masías' (country houses) on the outskirts of the city. It is a social and very fun experience.
Late October / November 1
The local tradition is the 'Castañada', where roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes and 'panellets' (marzipan sweets) are eaten. It coexists with the celebration of Halloween, with parties and events throughout the city.
Early December (Constitution Bridge)
The city of Vic, an hour from Barcelona, transforms into an authentic medieval market. Craft stalls, period food and street shows. A very popular day trip to start the Christmas season.

Local Beaches
La Barceloneta is the most famous, but also the most crowded. For a more local experience, go to Bogatell beach (quiet and sporty) or Mar Bella beach (popular in the LGBTQ+ community).
Neighborhood Festivals
If you travel in summer, check if it coincides with a neighborhood's 'Festa Major' (Gràcia in August is the most famous). The streets are decorated and there are free concerts.
Meal Times
Times are late. Lunch is between 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Dinner does not start before 9:00 p.m.

Greeting with 'Bon dia' (good morning) or 'Bonatarda' (good afternoon) in Catalan will be greatly appreciated by locals.

They are identified with a green cross. They offer advice for minor ailments and there is always a 'farmàcia de guàrdia' open 24 hours.

The main security problem is petty theft, not violence. Watch your belongings at all times, especially in crowds.

Always carry your bag or backpack closed and in front of your body. Never leave your phone or wallet on the table on terraces.
