History of Fukuoka

Explore the fascinating past of Fukuoka and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Thanks to its strategic location facing the Asian continent, Hakata Bay was the historic gateway for Buddhism, tea and diplomatic missions with China and Korea. In the 13th and 14th centuries it withstood Mongol invasion attempts thanks to coastal fortifications that are still visible today.

Development Period

During the Edo period, Kuroda Nagamasa built the imposing Fukuoka Castle. The city was split in two: Fukuoka, west of the Naka River, home to samurai and feudal lords; and Hakata, to the east, a bustling merchant and artisan center. The two were officially merged in 1889 under the name Fukuoka, with the name Hakata kept for its central station and port.

Modern Period

In the contemporary era, Fukuoka has evolved into the leading commercial and logistics hub of southwestern Japan. With the special status of 'National Strategic Zone for Startups', it attracts international entrepreneurs and young talent thanks to compact urban planning, excellent air connections and a high quality of life.
