History of Ao Nang

Explore the fascinating past of Ao Nang and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Originally known as 'Ao Phra Nang' (Bay of the Sacred Princess), the Krabi coast was inhabited since prehistoric times by hunter-gatherer communities and sea nomads (Chao Le, or 'sea gypsies'), who sailed among the mazes of mangroves and limestone caves.

Development Period

Until the late 1970s, Ao Nang was a peaceful Muslim fishing village surrounded by coconut palms and rubber plantations. With the arrival of the first backpackers and climbers drawn to the vertical walls of Railay in the 1980s and 1990s, the bay underwent a rapid transformation into an international tourist destination.

Modern Period

After a complete reconstruction and modernization following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Ao Nang has established itself as the most complete and accessible hub of services, resorts and island excursions on the Andaman coast.

Traveler Tips

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

Safety Tips

  1. Beware of the Monkeys on the Monkey Trail

The wild macaques that live along the trail are very used to tourists and will not hesitate to snatch water bottles, food bags or phones. Don't touch them, don't feed them and keep your backpacks tightly closed.

  2. Motorcycle Rental Safety

Traffic on the main road is smooth but requires maximum attention; always wear a full-face helmet, carry an international driving license with a motorcycle endorsement and do not leave your original passport as a deposit at the rental business.

  3. Currents and Flags in Monsoon Season

From May to October, scrupulously respect the red flags on the beach; rip currents at Noppharat Thara and Ao Nang can quickly become dangerous.
