History of Chiang Rai

Explore the fascinating past of Chiang Rai and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Founded in 1262 by King Mengrai as the original capital of the Kingdom of Lanna before the throne was moved to Chiang Mai. The city was a strategic military and trading point in the Kok River basin and the site where the legendary Emerald Buddha was discovered in 1434 after an earthquake cracked its stucco stupa.

Development Period

For centuries the region was contested and under Burmese rule until the late 18th century, when it was reintegrated into Siam's sphere of influence. Its geographic isolation preserved intact the customs, dialects, tiered-roof architecture and cuisine of the Lanna people.

Modern Period

In the last decades of the 20th century and early 21st, Chiang Rai left behind the turbulent past of the Golden Triangle opium trade to flourish as an international art mecca thanks to visionary local masters such as Chalermchai Kositpipat and Thawan Duchanee.

Historical Timeline
