History of Kanchanaburi

Explore the fascinating past of Kanchanaburi and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Inhabited since prehistoric times, as revealed by the Neolithic finds at Ban Kao cave, the region was consolidated in the 12th and 13th centuries as the westernmost military and trading outpost of the Khmer Empire, as attested by the border citadel of Prasat Mueang Sing.

Development Period

During the Siamese-Burmese wars of the 18th and 19th centuries, King Rama I relocated and fortified the city as a forward defensive bastion to halt invasions coming from the Three Pagodas Pass.

Modern Period

In 1942, during World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army forced more than 60,000 Allied prisoners of war and around 200,000 Asian laborers (romusha) to build the Thailand-Burma Railway. The massive loss of life established the area as an international symbol of peace and historical memory, and today it has become a leading hub of ecotourism and cultural tourism.

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

The macaques on levels 2 and 3 of the Erawan waterfalls are used to snatching food and plastic bottles from open bags. Do not leave belongings unattended while you swim.

  3. Non-Slip Footwear for Hiking

The wet limestone of the waterfalls and the wooden planks of the viaduct can become extremely slippery; wear closed river sandals or shoes with good grip.
