History of Kata

Explore the fascinating past of Kata and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Originally known as a bay of fishermen and farm gatherers surrounded by dense jungle hills, coconut palms and rubber plantations, the area served as a natural sheltered anchorage for small local boats in the lee of the islet of Koh Pu.

Development Period

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, independent travelers discovered the beauty of its beaches. The arrival in 1985 of the Club Med resort on the Kata Yai seafront shaped the town's layout, encouraging the opening of boutique hotels, diving schools and restaurants on the parallel streets.

Modern Period

In the 21st century, following the complete post-tsunami reconstruction of 2004, Kata reinvented itself as the epicenter of surfing and board sports in Thailand, hosting annual international surf competitions and consolidating a quality family tourism offering that is notably quieter and better kept than neighboring Patong.

Traveler Tips

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

Safety Tips

  1. Rip Currents in Monsoon Season

From May to October, strong rip channels form that drag swimmers out to sea. Swim only between the red and yellow flags patrolled by lifeguards and never enter the water if the red flag is flying.

  2. Access to Kata Beach and Club Med

The Club Med resort occupies the center of the beachfront. To reach the beach you must walk via the northern end access (next to the park) or the southern end access (Pakbang Road).

  3. Caution on the Hill to Kata Noi

The hill linking Kata Yai with Kata Noi has a very steep slope with blind bends; if you ride a scooter, slow down, brake with both hands and do not drift onto the gravel.
