History of Pai

Explore the fascinating past of Pai and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Originally inhabited by Shan (Tai Yai), Lisu and Karen ethnic communities, the Pai River valley was for centuries a self-sufficient farming settlement, isolated from the Siamese centers of power by the intricate mountain terrain.

Development Period

During World War II, the Japanese army built bridges and rudimentary roads through the valley to link Chiang Mai with Burma. In the mid-20th century, Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) refugees from Yunnan settled on the foothills, founding villages such as Santichon. In the late 1990s, adventurous backpackers discovered the serenity of the valley, establishing it as a countercultural and pacifist mecca.

Modern Period

From 2006, boosted by Thai romantic films such as 'Ruk Jung', the town evolved into a full-fledged tourist destination. Today yoga retreats, holistic wellness centers, wooden boutique hotels and organic plantations coexist in harmony with traditional rural life.
