History of Patong

Explore the fascinating past of Patong and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Originally named 'Pa Tong' (which in the southern Thai dialect means 'forest of banana leaves'), for centuries the area was a tiny, isolated settlement of fishermen and farmers separated from the rest of Phuket by a steep jungle mountain range.

Development Period

In the mid-1970s, Western backpackers discovered the pristine white-sand bay. In the 1980s and 1990s, the construction of the road crossing the hill from Phuket Town and the boom in charter flights unleashed dizzying tourist and hotel growth.

Modern Period

After being one of the areas hardest hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Patong undertook a comprehensive reconstruction with modern early warning systems, renovated seafront promenades, large entertainment complexes and world-class tourist infrastructure.

Traveler Tips

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

Safety Tips

  1. Beware of Jet Ski Scams

It is one of the most widespread scams: when you return the jet ski, the renter falsely claims you scratched the hull and demands exorbitant compensation. Photograph and film every detail of the vehicle before signing any contract.

  2. Rip Currents in Monsoon Season

Between May and October the sea has strong currents that drag swimmers to the bottom. Strictly respect the red flags on the shore: they mean entering the water is completely prohibited.

  3. Motorbike Rental and Patong Hill

The mountain road linking Patong with Phuket Town has very sharp curves with daily accidents. Drive slowly, always wear a helmet and carry an international license with the motorcycle endorsement.

  4. Taxis and Red Tuk-Tuks

Tuk-tuk drivers in Patong have very high standardized prices. Always agree on the total price before getting in, or use mobile apps such as Grab or Bolt for longer rides.
