History of Pattaya

Explore the fascinating past of Pattaya and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

For centuries, Pattaya was a quiet, anonymous fishing village on the Gulf of Thailand, whose main activity was fishing and small-scale trade.

Development Period

Its radical transformation began during the Vietnam War in the 1960s. American soldiers stationed at nearby bases, such as U-Tapao, discovered its beaches and began using it as a rest and recreation (R&R) destination. This constant flow of soldiers and money laid the foundation for its future tourism and entertainment industry, especially its nightlife.

Modern Period

After the war, Pattaya established itself as an international tourist destination. In recent decades, it has made a significant effort to diversify its offering beyond its nightlife reputation, investing in family attractions, luxury shopping centres, five-star hotels and cultural events to attract a wider audience, including families and luxury tourists, becoming a complete 'leisure city'.

Traveler Tips

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

Safety Tips

  1. Beware of Scams in Bars (Go-Go)

Never enter a bar that seems empty and where they insist on you a lot. Beware of inflated bills and charges for 'shows' you didn't ask for. Pay for each drink instantly.

  2. Choose your Tuk-Tuk well

In Pattaya, 'tuk-tuks' are actually 'songthaews' (vans). Those that run on fixed routes are cheap (10-20 baht). If you rent it as a private taxi, negotiate the price BEFORE you get in, as it will be much more expensive.

  3. Water Safety

Do not leave valuables unattended on the beach. Rent jet skis only from trusted operators and check the equipment before use.

Before you go

Quick answers to plan your trip with confidence

Family-friendliness rated 85/100. It usually works well for family trips.
Safety rated 70/100. Never enter a bar that seems empty and where they insist on you a lot. Beware of inflated bills and charges for 'shows' you didn't ask for. Pay for each drink instantly.
