History of Ankara

Explore the fascinating past of Ankara and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Known in antiquity as Ancyra, the city was a strategic enclave for Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Galatians and Romans. It preserves key remains such as the Temple of Augustus and Rome (with the famous Res Gestae Divi Augusti) and 3rd-century Roman baths.

Development Period

During the Byzantine and Ottoman periods it continued as a modest merchant town famous for Angora goat wool (mohair). Its fate changed dramatically in 1923, when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk designated it the capital of the newly founded Republic of Turkey because of its sheltered geographic position and independence from the imperial Ottoman past.

Modern Period

Turned into a symbol of Turkish modernization through geometric, functionalist European-style urban planning, Ankara is today a modern metropolis of embassies, top-tier universities, contemporary art galleries and government headquarters.
