History of Bursa

Explore the fascinating past of Bursa and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Founded in the 2nd century BC as Prusa by King Prusias I of Bithynia (according to tradition, on the strategic advice of Hannibal Barca), the city flourished under Roman and Byzantine rule thanks to its mineral hot springs and its key position on the routes of Anatolia.

Development Period

In 1326, after a ten-year siege led by Osman Gazi and his son Orhan, it was taken and made the first great imperial capital of the emerging Ottoman Empire. The city became the western terminus of the Silk Road and saw the birth of the architectural canons of the first great multi-domed mosques.

Modern Period

After ceding the capital to Edirne and then to Istanbul, Bursa retained its status as a commercial and spiritual center. In the 20th and 21st centuries it consolidated itself as Turkey's fourth most populous metropolis and its largest automotive and textile manufacturing hub, and its palace and commercial complexes were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
