History of Fethiye

Explore the fascinating past of Fethiye and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Known in classical antiquity as Telmessos, it was one of the most prosperous and independent cities of the Lycian confederation, famous throughout the Mediterranean for its oracle and dream-interpreting seers consulted by Alexander the Great. Monolithic sarcophagi and temple tombs cut into the rock from the 4th century BC survive from this era.

Development Period

During the Middle Ages it was renamed Anastasiopolis and later Meğri under Byzantine and Ottoman rule. In 1914, the town was renamed Fethiye in honor of Captain Fethi Bey, one of the first Turkish military aviators, killed in action. In 1957, a massive earthquake destroyed much of the traditional old town, forcing a modern, low-rise urban reconstruction.

Modern Period

Now one of the most prestigious nautical and tourist centers in Turkey, Fethiye stands out today as the world capital of paragliding, the main port for blue cruises on traditional schooners ('gulet') and a hub for active travelers, families and international sailors.

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

Safety Tips

  1. Paragliding Safety

Always check that the company you choose in Ölüdeniz operates with pilots certified by the Turkish Air Sports Federation (THK) and includes official insurance.

  2. Hiking the Lycian Way

The coastal paths are steep and stony. Wear closed trekking shoes with good grip and carry at least 2 liters of water per person; the heat dehydrates quickly.

  3. Watching for Currents

The Blue Lagoon has no currents, but open beaches such as Belcekız or Çalış experience waves and abrupt depth a few meters from shore.
