Graz was first mentioned in 1128, developing around a castle on the Schlossberg hill. The name comes from the Slavic word 'gradec', meaning 'small castle'.
During the Renaissance, Graz became the residence of Austrian archdukes and a major cultural center. The old town's magnificent architecture dates largely from this period, when the city flourished as a center of learning and culture.
Graz was designated European Capital of Culture in 2003 and became a UNESCO Creative City of Design in 2011. Today it's known for its innovative architecture, strong university presence, and excellent culinary scene.
