History of Balchik

Explore the fascinating past of Balchik and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Founded by Thracian and Ionian settlers in the 6th century BC under the name Krounoi ('Springs') and later renamed Dionysopolis in honour of the god Dionysus, the city was a prosperous Greek and Roman trading settlement, of which remains of temples dedicated to Cybele are still preserved.

Development Period

During the Middle Ages it formed part of the Principality of Karvuna and the Bulgarian Empire, later passing under Ottoman rule. In the early 20th century, when the region of Southern Dobruja came under Romanian administration (1913-1940), Queen Marie of Romania fell in love with the place and built her holiday residence there with distinguished architects and landscape designers.

Modern Period

Reincorporated into Bulgaria in 1940 through the Treaty of Craiova, Balchik kept its stately character, establishing itself as a cultural retreat for poets, painters and botany lovers, modernising its seafront promenade and positioning itself alongside world-class golf resorts.
