History of Kazanlak

Explore the fascinating past of Kazanlak and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

In the first millennium BC, the region was the political and spiritual core of the Thracian Odrysian kingdom. King Seuthes III founded his capital, Seuthopolis (now under the waters of the Koprinka reservoir), nearby, and the Thracian monarchs built lavish domed tombs decorated with unique frescoes such as the famous Tomb of Kazanlak.

Development Period

Under Ottoman rule from the 14th century, Kazanlak flourished thanks to the introduction of Damask Rose cultivation imported from the Near East. In the 18th and 19th centuries the distillation of 'attar' (liquid gold of roses) turned local merchants into influential exporters for European high perfumery, boosting education and Bulgarian Revival art.

Modern Period

A key setting of the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) at the nearby Shipka Pass, Kazanlak evolved in the 20th century toward military and precision mechanical industry without losing its botanical leadership. Today it is a nerve center of archaeological research and sustainable cultural tourism.
