History of Koprivshtitsa

Explore the fascinating past of Koprivshtitsa and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Arising in the late 14th century during the Ottoman invasion, Koprivshtitsa was born as an inaccessible refuge in the mountains where Bulgarian nobles, boyars and shepherds fled to preserve their Orthodox faith, customs and communal autonomy.

Development Period

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the village prospered thanks to transhumant herding, wool textile production and fine furriery. Its merchants traded from Istanbul to Vienna and Cairo, amassing great fortunes that they invested in cultural patronage, founding Bulgaria's first modern secular school and building lavish residences in Balkan Baroque style.

Modern Period

On April 20, 1876, Koprivshtitsa staged the 'first shot' of the April Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. Declared a national architectural and historical reserve town in 1952, it has preserved more than 380 architectural monuments and hosts the legendary National Folklore Festival, a UNESCO intangible heritage.
