History of Nesebar

Explore the fascinating past of Nesebar and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Founded more than three millennia ago by the Thracians under the name Menebria, it became in the 6th century BC a prosperous Doric-Megarian Greek colony known as Mesembria. It was a prominent coin-minting center and strategic port on the Black Sea trade routes before its peaceful incorporation into the Roman Empire in 71 BC.

Development Period

During the Middle Ages, Nesebar was a coveted border stronghold that frequently changed hands between the Byzantine Empire and the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. This commercial and spiritual heyday led to the construction of more than forty temples using complex ceramic-plastic techniques that still adorn its streets.

Modern Period

In the 19th century it was reborn as a flourishing fishing and wine-producing port, shaping its typical two-story residential look. In 1983 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and today it is an essential cultural enclave of the Balkans with first-rate heritage and maritime tourism.
