About Ruse - Culture, History & Character

City Description

Ruse is Bulgaria's fifth-largest city and the country's main river port on the banks of the majestic Danube, the natural border with Romania. Popularly known as 'The Little Vienna', it dazzles with its harmonious historic center from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where Neo-Baroque, Neoclassical and Central European Secession-style mansions coexist. Its cosmopolitan legacy, its riverside parks and its proximity to the canyons and rock-hewn monasteries of Rusenski Lom make it the cultural capital of northern Bulgaria.

History of Ruse

Explore the fascinating past of Ruse and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

The city's origins go back to the Roman fortress of Sexaginta Prista ('Port of the Sixty Ships'), built in the 1st century AD under Emperor Vespasian as a key river bastion of the Danube Limes against barbarian incursions.

Development Period

During the Ottoman period it was known as Rusçuk, one of the most strategic military and trading posts on the Danube. In the mid-19th century it became the capital of the Danube Vilayet under the reformer Midhat Pasha, who introduced the railway, the telegraph and modern European urban planning techniques.

Modern Period

After the Liberation in 1878, Ruse was the most cosmopolitan and advanced city in Bulgaria, the birthplace of the country's first banks, insurance companies, modern printing presses and film screenings. In the 21st century it remains a European logistics and industrial hub, linked to Bucharest and Giurgiu by the Danube Bridge.
