I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Zagreb y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
The area around Zagreb has been inhabited since Roman times, with the ancient settlement of Andautonia nearby. The earliest evidence of Croats in the region dates back to the early medieval period, with the first written mention of Zagreb in 1094 when King Ladislaus I founded the Zagreb Diocese on Kaptol hill.
In the 13th century, the neighboring settlement of Gradec was declared a free royal town by King Bela IV, fostering aristocratic and commercial growth. Over centuries, Zagreb expanded beyond its medieval walls, integrating Kaptol and Gradec into a single city by 1850. The 19th century brought modernization with railways, waterworks, and trams, while the 20th century saw further urban development despite wartime damages.
Today, Zagreb is Croatia’s political and cultural heart, boasting a population over 800,000. It is a modern European capital with thriving arts, education, and business sectors, while preserving its historic core and green spaces. The city continues to develop infrastructure and cultural offerings, maintaining its role as a key regional center.
