History of Carcassonne

Explore the fascinating past of Carcassonne and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

The site has been inhabited since the 6th century BC. It was an important Gallic oppidum before becoming the Roman colony of Julia Carcaso in the 1st century BC, strategically located on trade routes.

Development Period

During the Middle Ages, the Trencavel dynasty greatly expanded the city and built the core of the castle and the basilica. After the Albigensian Crusade, it passed to the French crown, which added the outer defensive wall.

Modern Period

In the 19th century, the citadel was in ruins and threatened with demolition. The architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led a monumental and celebrated restoration that gave it back its idealized medieval appearance, making it a world icon.
