Founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD. under the name Aquae Aureliae so that the Rhine legionnaires could recover in its thermal water springs at more than 60 °C; Emperor Caracalla visited the city to alleviate his arthritic ailments, building the first large stone baths.

Development Period

In the 19th century, Baden-Baden flourished as 'the summer capital of Europe'. Kings, tsars, aristocrats and literary and musical geniuses (Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Brahms, Clara Schumann) came annually, attracted by the healing waters, the horse races and the refined casino.

Modern Period

In 2021 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the group of 'Great Spa Cities of Europe'. Today it is a global benchmark for wellness tourism, haute cuisine, contemporary art and the main gateway to the Black Forest.
