Nuremberg

A city of immense historical weight, from its medieval imperial past to its central role in the Nuremberg Trials, famous for its castle and its Christmas market.

About Nuremberg

About Nuremberg - Culture, History & Character

City Description

Nuremberg, the unofficial jewel of Franconia, is a city of overwhelming historical duality. On the one hand, it boasts a glorious past as an Imperial Free City, with an imposing castle, medieval walls and the legacy of the Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. On the other hand, it faces its dark role as the ideological center of the Third Reich. This tension between medieval beauty and the grim history of the 20th century, culminating in the Nuremberg Trials, makes it a fascinating, educational and deeply human destination, also famous for its magical Christmas market and culinary delights.

Population

Approximately 523,000 (city).

Languages

Alemán

German is the official language. The local dialect is Franconian ('Fränkisch'). English is widespread in the tourism sector and is spoken by the majority of young people.

History of Nuremberg

Explore the fascinating past of Nuremberg and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

First mentioned in 1050, Nuremberg quickly grew in importance thanks to its location on key trade routes. The Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg), built on a sandstone crag, became one of the most important palatial residences of the Holy Roman Empire.

Development Period

Its golden age was between the 15th and 16th centuries as an Imperial Free City. It became an epicenter of the German Renaissance, home to artists such as Albrecht Dürer, and a center of printing, science and commerce. It was considered the unofficial capital of the Holy Empire, since the Imperial Diets were held here and the imperial jewels were kept.

Modern Period

In the 20th century, the city acquired a dark new fame when it was chosen by the Nazi Party as the venue for its massive annual congresses. Zeppelin Field and other monumental structures are witnesses of this era. After being almost completely devastated by bombing in 1945, it was symbolically chosen as the site of the Nuremberg Trials, where Nazi leaders were tried for their crimes, laying the foundations of modern international criminal law.
