History of Chora

Explore the fascinating past of Chora and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Built in a natural shelter facing the sea channel leading to the sacred island of Delos, ancient Chora served as a strategic anchorage, agricultural larder and naval lookout point for the Ionian civilizations that converged on the sanctuary of Apollo.

Development Period

During Venetian rule from the 13th century, the town was reshaped as a compact fortress (Kastro). Its winding alleys were designed as a defensive maze to disorient Barbary pirates. In the 18th century the commercial, bourgeois quarter of merchant captains, known today as Little Venice, flourished.

Modern Period

From the 1950s, Chora attracted international intellectuals, aristocrats and artists, becoming the avant-garde, LGBTQ+ and exclusive hospitality haven that defines its contemporary global identity.
