I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Corfu (Kerkyra) y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Known in mythology as the island of the Phaeacians, who welcomed Odysseus on his return trip to Ithaca. It was an important city-state in ancient times, often in conflict with its metropolis, Corinth. Its strategic location made it a coveted prize.
The most influential period in the formation of modern Corfu was Venetian rule, which lasted four centuries (1386-1797). The Venetians turned it into a bastion against the Ottoman Empire, building their impressive fortresses. After a brief French period under Napoleon, the island became a British protectorate (1815-1864), leaving a visible mark on its architecture, its love of cricket and its ginger beer ('tsitsibira').
Corfu was united with Greece in 1864. It became a refuge for the European aristocracy, attracting figures such as Empress Sisi of Austria, who built the Achilleion Palace here. After the Second World War, tourism became the driving force of its economy. Today, it is a mature destination that balances mass tourism in some coastal areas with the tranquility of its interior and the sophistication of its capital.
