History of Delphi

Explore the fascinating past of Delphi and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Revered since the 8th century BC as the center of the known universe after the eagles of Zeus crossed paths, the priestess Pythia prophesied in the Temple of Apollo on political decisions, military alliances and colonial foundations that guided the destiny of Greek civilization.

Development Period

After centuries of splendor and the prestigious Pythian Games, the decline of pagan religion led Emperor Theodosius I to close the oracle in the late 4th century AD. In time, the medieval settlement of Kastri covered the ruins until it was evacuated and systematically excavated by French archaeologists in the late 19th century.

Modern Period

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the Delphi complex is one of the most magnetic cultural hubs of the Mediterranean, complemented today by the winter and gastronomic infrastructure of Arachova as a mountain base.
