History of Ioannina

Explore the fascinating past of Ioannina and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Although the lake basin and nearby Dodona hosted very ancient settlements and the famous oracle of Zeus from the second millennium BC, the fortified city of Ioannina was formally founded under the Byzantine Empire by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century AD. After the capture of Constantinople by the Crusaders in 1204, it became one of the nerve centers of the Despotate of Epirus.

Development Period

Conquered by the Ottomans in 1430, Ioannina flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries as a major hub of Balkan trade, silversmithing and intellectual thought, becoming the epicenter of the Greek Enlightenment. Between 1788 and 1822, the feared Ali Pasha ruled his semi-autonomous fiefdom from here, defying the Sublime Porte and attracting travelers such as Lord Byron.

Modern Period

Incorporated into Greece in 1913 during the Balkan Wars, the city suffered the tragic deportation of its ancient Romaniote Jewish community during the Second World War. Today, Ioannina is a thriving university, technology and nature-tourism hub that zealously preserves its walled character.

Traveler Tips

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

Safety Tips

  1. Proper Footwear for the Castle

The traditional cobblestones of the Kastro and the stone approaches to the mosques are uneven and become very slippery in damp or rainy weather; wear rubber-soled shoes with good grip.

  2. Driving on Mountain Roads

If you travel to Zagori or Metsovo, be extra careful: these are winding mountain roads where rocks can fall onto the roadway after rain and cows, goats or wildlife may cross.

  3. Unfenced Viewpoints at Vikos

At natural viewpoints such as Oxya or Beloi, the precipices drop hundreds of meters vertically with no artificial fences; don't approach unstable rock ledges to take selfies.
