Historical Journey

Ancient Period

According to Homeric legend it was founded by Nauplius, son of the god Poseidon. In classical antiquity it served as an anchorage and fortified naval base for neighboring Argos on the Akronafplia promontory, preserving Cyclopean Mycenaean traces in its foundations.

Development Period

Disputed by Franks, Venetians and Ottomans, the Most Serene Republic of Venice stamped its architectural look on the city by building impregnable bastions such as Bourtzi and the imposing Palamidi fortress, christening the stronghold 'Napoli di Romania'.

Modern Period

Liberated in 1822, Nafplio was designated the seat of government and first official capital of the new independent Greek state between 1829 and 1834. After the assassination of its first governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, King Otto moved the court and the definitive capital to Athens.
