History of Rhodes

Explore the fascinating past of Rhodes and discover how it has developed over the centuries.

Historical Journey

Ancient Period

Founded in 408 BC through the union of three city-states (Ialysos, Kameiros and Lindos), Rhodes quickly became a great maritime and commercial power. It was famous for housing the Colossus of Rhodes, a bronze statue of the god Helios more than 30 meters tall that was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Development Period

In 1309, the Knights of the Order of St. John (Hospitallers) occupied the island and turned the city into an impregnable European medieval fortress in the East. For more than two centuries they built colossal walls and the Palace of the Grand Master, until in 1522 they surrendered after a six-month siege by the Ottoman forces of Suleiman the Magnificent.

Modern Period

After four centuries of Ottoman rule and three decades of Italian administration in the early 20th century, which restored much of the monumental heritage, Rhodes joined Greece in 1947. Its Medieval City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and today is one of the cultural and tourism engines of the Dodecanese.

Traveler Tips

Essential advice and local insights to make your trip memorable and safe

Safety Tips

  1. Suitable Footwear on Medieval Streets

The traditional paving made of polished river pebbles (chochlakia) can be extremely slippery, especially when wet or if you walk in flip-flops or heels.

  2. Sun Protection and Heatstroke

In summer, the stone of the walls and the enclosed streets accumulate intense heat. Always carry mineral water, a hat and sunscreen if you explore at midday.

  3. Riding Scooters and Quads

If you rent a quad or motorbike to leave the city, take extreme care on island roads: the surface can be slippery and the shoulders narrow.

  4. Beach Safety

On the west coast of the city (Ixia side) currents and swell are stronger; at Elli beach the sea is usually much calmer and suitable for swimming.
