I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Santorini (Thira) y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Originally called Strongyli ('The Round One'), the island was home to a flourishing Minoan civilization. Around 1600 BC, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history caused the center of the island to sink, creating the current caldera and, according to some theories, giving rise to the legend of Atlantis. The archaeological site of Akrotiri, a 'Minoan Pompeii', is a testament to this era.
After the eruption, the island was repopulated and known as Thira. It passed through Roman and Byzantine dominions before being conquered by the Venetians, who called it 'Santa Irene', from which the name 'Santorini' derives. During this period, 'kastelia' (castles) were built to protect against pirates.
The island remained relatively isolated, with an economy based on agriculture and the export of wine and pozzolana soil. A devastating earthquake in 1956 caused a large emigration. Beginning in the 1970s, tourism began to grow exponentially, transforming Santorini into one of the most coveted and luxurious destinations in the world, as it struggles to balance development with the preservation of its unique character.

Non-existent. The economy is 100% dependent on tourism.
A dream place for a short 'workation', but impractical and extremely expensive for long stays.
