I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Utrecht y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
The origins of Utrecht date back to 48 AD, when the Romans built a fort ('castellum') called 'Traiectum' on the border of their empire, at a ford of the Rhine River. This fort became an important religious settlement.
During the Middle Ages, Utrecht became the most important religious center in the Netherlands, ruled by a powerful prince-bishop. In 1579, it was the site of the signing of the 'Union of Utrecht', the alliance of the northern provinces that is considered the birth of the Dutch nation. Despite losing some influence to Amsterdam, it remained a prosperous and culturally rich city.
In the 19th century, it became the main railway junction in the Netherlands, a role it maintains today. It was the home of architect Gerrit Rietveld and a key center of the De Stijl art movement, which had a huge influence on modern design. Today, with the largest university in the country, Utrecht is a young, innovative and constantly growing city, often cited as one of the happiest in Europe.
