Everything you need to know to plan your visit
From June to September is the best time to ensure clear skies at the viewpoints and enjoy the sea. However, May and October are great for avoiding crowds. Winter is very rainy and clouds usually cover the lagoons, but it is the best time to enjoy the hot springs without excessive heat.
The weather is extremely unpredictable. Always carry a raincoat, even if it's sunny. Clouds can cover overlooks in minutes; If you see a clear lagoon, take advantage of the moment! It is mandatory to reserve a car months in advance, since the fleet is limited.
Available in main squares of Ponta Delgada and hotels. In mountain areas the connection is null.
Vodafone or MEO have excellent 4G/5G coverage throughout almost the entire island, except in deep craters.
Do not leave the marked trails. The volcanic terrain can be unstable and the fog can quickly disorient you.
Be careful with cows on the road in high areas and with dense fog that can reduce visibility to a few meters.
Without a car you will miss 80% of the attractions. Don't rely on public transportation to see the lagoons.
From 2023 there are restrictions on access and shuttles in summer to protect the environment. Find out before you go.
If you want to eat Cozido in Furnas, you must call the restaurant at least 24 hours in advance.
Try cheese from the neighboring island of São Jorge, available in all São Miguel markets; It is the best in Portugal.
The famous blue flowers that line the roads are a symbol. Don't tear them off.
Bring an old, dark swimsuit to the iron hot springs (Furnas), as the orange color of rust permanently stains your clothes.
