Before the European conquest, Adeje was the residence of the Mencey Tinerfe el Grande, chief of all of Tenerife. After the division of the island into nine Menceyatos at the end of the 14th century, Adeje became one of these Guanche kingdoms, with great political and social importance. The area was a center of power and refuge for Guanche rebels during the Castilian conquest in the 15th century.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, after the conquest of Tenerife by Alonso Fernández de Lugo, Adeje began its European colonization with the granting of lands and the establishment of a population center around the Adeje River.In 1560 the local parish was founded.In the Modern Age, Adeje maintained its importance as a manor until 1811, when it was incorporated into the Spanish state as a municipality, consolidating itself as a town with agricultural and commercial development.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Adeje experienced urban and social growth, maintaining its historical identity.In 2007, the City Council obtained the title of Historical Village, recognizing its cultural legacy.Currently, Adeje is an important tourist destination, especially in the Costa Adeje area, with modern infrastructure and an economy based on tourism, preserving monuments such as the Casa Fuerte de Adeje and promoting its cultural heritage.
