📜 History and Evolution

A journey through time to understand how this fascinating city-state was shaped

Ancient Origins

The area, known as 'Ager Vaticanus', was outside the walls of ancient Rome and was the site of the martyrdom of Saint Peter the Apostle. Emperor Constantine built a basilica over his tomb in the 4th century.

Historical Development

For centuries, Popes ruled the Papal States, a vast territory in central Italy. After the unification of Italy in 1870, the Popes considered themselves 'prisoners in the Vatican'.

Modern Era

Vatican City was established as a sovereign state in 1929 through the Lateran Pacts with Italy, guaranteeing its independence. Today it is an absolute theocratic monarchy ruled by the Pope, a pilgrimage center and a top tourist destination.
