The name 'Niagara' is derived from the indigenous word 'Onguiaahra', which means 'The Strait' or 'Thundering Waters'. For millennia, the region was home to Iroquois people. French priest Louis Hennepin was the first European to document the falls in 1678, whose description brought this wonder to the attention of the Western world.
In the 19th century, Niagara Falls became a major tourist destination. The arrival of the railway made access easier and hotels began to emerge. The area also became famous for daredevils who attempted to cross the falls on a tightrope or descend in barrels.
